The Sculpture "Bear Cub Eric"
Address | Brīvības street, Ogre |
Description | Since childhood, several generations of Ogre inhabitants remember the sculpture of a bear cub with its pot of honey. It was set up in the 1950s and is a typical environmental element of the Soviet era. The sculptures were mass-produced at that time, and such bears were located in many Latvian cities. However, this bear got its name in a peculiar way. In 1999, its paw was broken off. The repair was taken up by the teachers and students of the Ogre Art School, and donations were being collected for the restoration work. Sadly, the only one to support the campaign was a 7-year-old boy Ēriks Ozoliņš, who donated his lunch money. Since the bear needed a name, the Ogre Art School decided to thank the boy and named the bear Ēriks in honour of its only benefactor.
