Memorial Plaque to Latvian Riflemen
Address | Daugava promenade, Ogre |
Description | A memorial plaque on the island of Ogre is dedicated to the historical events of the First World War. It was the place from which, in October 1916, soldiers from the 2nd Riga Latvian Riflemen Battalion crossed the Daugava. They were on a reconnaissance mission to take German soldiers prisoners. During the night, the riflemen suffered heavy losses - 17 wounded soldiers drowned, three scouts were killed at the German trenches, and several were seriously injured. The memorial plaque was unveiled in November 2008 in honour of Latvia’s 90th anniversary.
