The Ķente Castle Mound

Address Ogres Municipality
Description

The Ķente Castle Mound is one of the most noteworthy archaeological monuments in the Ogre municipality. Grantskalns Hill is the continuation of the Ogre Blue Hills (Ogres Zilie kalni) and has the castle mound located on its peak. Several names have been preserved for this ancient location - Vecā Rīga (Old Riga), Kančakalns (Kanča Hill) and Kamieļmugura (Camel's Back).

In ancient times, there was a lake on the western side of the hill and, supposedly, a 2-ha-large settlement around the castle mound. Many stories and tales regarding Ķente hill still exist. The oldest settlers are said to have arrived there as early as 1,000 BC. It is considered that the Ķente castle mound was one of the political centres for the Daugava Livonians. It was also the centre in the lower reaches of the Daugava where Livonian leaders gathered to discuss the matters of war.

In its lifetime, the castle mound was destroyed several times. The last time the fortifications were demolished was in the 9th century, after which the settlers no longer restored the hill. The castle mound was inhabited by the Balts and the Baltic Finnic tribes. From 1954 until 1958, the castle mound was the site of extensive archaeological excavations led by Ādolfs Stubavs, who thoroughly examined the castle mound.

During Soviet rule, due to the research and industrial activities, the Ķente castle mound was practically levelled.
