The Ogre Castle Mound
Address | Mazozoli Parish, Ogre Municipality |
Description | The castle mound is located near the Pilskalni homestead on the right bank of the river Ogre. It was created in a naturally secure place, once surrounded by the river on three sides. Now, on both sides of the hill, there is the old riverbed of the Ogre but, in the past, the river flowed right past the castle mound making the bog-surrounded hill with its steep slopes quite inaccessible. On the south-west and north-east sides, the slopes reach up to 15 m in height. The southern side of the hill is especially steep. The plateau of the castle mound is a bit slanting and oblong, 60 x 10–20 m in size. A more than a metre thick black cultural layer was found on the castle mound. Single finds help estimate that the castle mound was inhabited during the Late Iron Age (800–1200). Some historians maintain that the Ogre castle mound is the location of the Jersika Principality Lepene castle (castrum Lepene) mentioned in written sources of the 13th century. The castle mound is an archaeological monument of national importance.
