The Ogre River

^{The Ogre is the third longest river in Latvia that flows through the Madona, Cēsis and Ogre municipalities. The river is 188 km long with a gradient of 222 m from source to mouth. Its largest tributaries are the Līčupe and the Aviekste. The Ogre flows into the Daugava, and in no part has it been dredged. In 2003, experts of the Latvian Fund for Nature found that there was a large concentration of specially protected species' habitats and plants in the Ogre River. The valley of the river holds 15 of Latvia's specially protected habitats. Due to the river banks facing directly north and south, each side of the river has its own microclimate. On one bank, grass can be sprouting, while on the opposite - the snow has not melted yet. The riverbanks can contain exposed dolomite deposits. Both the Kalnrēži dolomite-sandstone near Rembate and the Ogre dolomite crag next to the old Ogre cardboard factory are protected geological sites. Throughout the season, the Ogre can be boated, starting from the Vecogre hydroelectric power plant (Emmas dzirnavas), and from Ērgļi, or even from Lake Inesis via the Sustala, during floods.}
