Kābeļkalns

Kābeles ancient burial ground. The Livonian culture flourished in the 10^th to 13^th century when settlements were built on the banks of Daugava. Monuments of different Livs are found from Aizkraukle up to the river mouth, but a small number of these were destroyed due to the construction of Rīga hydropower plant in the 70s of the 20^th century. During the construction of the power plant, 13 burial grounds, 1 hillfort, 7 village sites, 2 medieval churches and cemeteries disappeared in the reservoir. Only two Livonian tumuli have survived to the modern days, one of which is located in Kābeles of Ikšķile. A tumulus of 81 Livs has survived on Kābeles ancient burial ground, which is considered a significant piece of cultural heritage.

At present, thanks to the initiative and active participation of the residents, the ancient burial ground is clean and free of bushes.
